Steps of the Accommodations Process
- Employee initiates accommodation request by contacting University ADA Services or is referred to the office by his or her supervisor.
- Employee contacts doctor or treating professional to send documentation (records) to University ADA Services.
- Records are then received. University ADA Services and employee review records and determine if employee meets the definition of disability.
- Need for accommodation is established.
- University ADA Services, employee, and supervisor: Evaluate the job/essential functions, discuss employee's specific abilities and limitations, and identify potential accommodations.*
- If a reasonable accommodation is identified, the accommodation request form is signed and returned to University ADA Services.
- University ADA Services conducts a review in 3 months if needed.

Applicants: any applicant for employment at Virginia Tech may request accommodations in the application or interview process by contacting ADA Services.
Current Employees: any employee with a mental or physical condition that impact their performance can contact ADA Services to discuss possible accommodations.
*A Qualified Individual with a Disability is one who possesses the required skills, experience, education, and other job related requirements and can, with or without Reasonable Accommodations, perform the Essential Functions of that job.
Essential Functions are the fundamental responsibilities that an employee must perform.
Reasonable Accommodations are modifications or adjustments to the work environment or the ways in which work is performed which enable a qualified individual to perform the essential functions of that job or to participate in the normal work environment.
